Tempo control is the feature instructors ask about most once they've taught to a song that was just a little too fast. Several services offer it. They don't all work the same way.

Power Music NOW

Power Music's app listing describes a player that changes the BPM of songs in your library without changing pitch, within plus or minus 50 percent, with gapless playback, tempo lock by BPM or percentage, interval and Tabata timers, and custom beat-mixed compilations from its library. Subscribers get unlimited Power Music albums and royalty-free music for live-streamed classes, according to the listing.

On Trustpilot, a small number of UK reviews (9 at the time of writing) are largely about one gym chain requiring the app. Those reviewers objected to limited music choice and tracks they felt were reengineered to a standard beat.

Yes!GO (Yes! Fitness Music)

Yes!GO's App Store listing describes access to more than 2,000 pre-mixed workout mixes, unlimited custom non-stop mixes from more than 13,000 songs, monthly releases in each class format, and its Tempo Magic Pro pitching technology. App Store reviews include praise from long-time instructors, alongside reports of glitches, freezing and having to reinstall.

The approach behind each

Both apps grew out of fitness music catalogs: albums produced and mixed for classes, with tempo tools added on top. That is a solid model when the catalog has what you want.

Fitness Radio starts from a large streaming library and applies phrasing and tempo to it. Phrasing is detected from the song's first downbeat, and tracks are time-stretched to the BPM you set, so you aren't limited to songs that were produced at your tempo.

Questions to ask any tempo-control app

  • Does the pitch stay natural when you change the tempo?
  • Does phrasing stay aligned at the new BPM?
  • How big is the library you can re-tempo, and how often is it updated?
  • Can you build your own playlists, or only play pre-made mixes?
  • Is playback gapless between songs?
